5 Mistakes to Avoid when Setting Business Goals

Recently, when running a goal setting workshop for business owners, one of my delegates asked me: ‘What gets in the way of you achieving your business goals?’ A great question, that really got me thinking; about, not only stuff that gets in my way, but also ways in which I combat these issues and obstacles. So, January, you’re setting bold and compelling business goals – keep to these 5 rules:

Rule No. 1 – Believe in yourself and your goals. Although you may find this difficult, especially if you’re setting really bold business goals, or you’ve set them before and haven’t achieved them. You must relinquish all thoughts of the obstacles and barriers to your achievement and BELIEVE in yourself, in your plans and then the actions that you will take this time to Make Them Happen.

Way in which to combat the obstacle= Create an affirmation/positive statement in the here and now, which totally affirms your goal, e.g. ‘I am running a successful business earning….’ or ‘It will be fabulous when…’ Anything that makes you feel really positive about your potential future.

Rule No. 2 – Only be reliant upon yourself when setting your goals. This was a mistake I made when I first set out in business and goal setting. I included and involved others in what I wanted to achieve. Yes, they may be included WHEN you’ve achieved and celebrating or enjoying the rewards and benefits they bring, but only include yourself in the actions being carried out.

Way in which to combat the obstacle = get the buy in from person/s involved in the end result. They may wish to create their own actions to achieve the goal too. Find out ‘why’ they might also like to achieve the same result.

Rule No. 3 – Keep your business goals in line with your personal life. It’s no good having business goals that are going to be detrimental to the enjoyment of your personal life. No one was ever happy being a lonely millionaire!

Way in which to combat the obstacle = write down a list of your top 10 personal and professional values (rules for which you run your life). Always keep these values in mind when setting your personal and professional goals, this helps to keep all your goals in check.

Rule No. 4 – Make your goals bold and realistic. For example; if you’re setting monetary goals, establish a figure and work backwards from that – how do the numbers add up, how many clients, customers, products, services would you need to sell on a daily, weekly and monthly basis? What else would, could you do to make those figures work?

Way in which to combat the obstacle = Live those figures; have them as part of your daily language, thought process, affirmations, find other more innovative ways to make them happen: price increase, new products and services etc.

Rule No. 5 – Take Action. Some personal development books may point towards you thinking about stuff and then just magically achieving. Yes, the law of attraction works, but you must take action on your bold business goals to really make the magic happen. Speak to any business owner or successful entrepreneur and they will all point to hard work as the cornerstone of their success.

Way in which to combat the obstacle = take small steps, but take them each and every day to break down those bigger goals and get closer to Making them Happen!
