5 Highly Recommended Personal Development Books

I’ve been coaching for 8 years, but it’s only really been in the last 2-3 years that I have started to really devour personal and business development books. Whether it’s a career change you’re after or looking to achieve some big goals that at this moment in time are way, way out of your comfort zone, or reprogramming yourself for a more positive mindset; these are 5 personal development books come highly recommended by me as a coach. These books have been appreciated at all different periods of my personal and professional life

#1 The Life Coaching Handbook by Curly Martin. It would be of an extreme disservice if this one didn’t get the top spot. In 2007 when I resigned from my corporate career this is the first personal development book I read. At this juncture I had no real idea of what I wanted to do career wise and was at a complete cross roads. Determined to stay calm about the situation and take my time (within reason!) about my next career choice, this is the book I turned to. It’s an introduction into the wonderful world of NLP and although aimed at Life Coaches it will help you take charge of your life and the decisions you make. This, and the book below, definitely changed the course of my life, forever.

#2 Change your Life in 7 Days by Paul McKenna. I’m not sure how many times over Paul McKenna is an author, this is definitely one of my faves. Again read at my ‘cross-roads’, it’s packed full of really useful (NLP) activities and techniques to help you gain confidence, set goals, decision making, developing a positive mindset and much more. It came with a mind programming CD (back in the day!) to be listened to before each day and exercise and if you’re really serious about your personal development and committed to making a positive change then this will have a huge impact.

#3 What Colour is Your Parachute by Richard N. Bolles. The perfect personal development book to read if you’re looking for a career change and you have absolutely no idea of what you want to do. At all. This is packed full of practical advice and hands on activities and exercises for you to complete that will have you analysing yourself not the job market. From where you want to work to who you want to work with all the way through to the career that will have you jumping out of bed on a Monday morning. This book, if nothing else, is a helpful reminder that there are no excuses for sitting in a career you hate.

#4 The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. If you’re looking to make major changes in your life with a small amount of effort, but a big dollop of discipline then this book will work wonders. On the back of this I now save 10% of everything I earn (for holidays and fun stuff) floss my teeth daily, exercise 3 times a week, meditate regularly, to name just a few of the positive changes which has had a massive impact on how I feel, how I look and how I think. A great book with simple advice; helping you to take major leaps forward in the ways that you want the most.

#5 The Magic, by Rhonda Byrne. A book I’m just finishing. And the 3rd along the same lines as her others, all about giving gratitude for what you have and the Law of Attraction will bring more of the same to you. After all they do say if we all put our problems into a pot, we’d take our own back. So why not give thanks for all the great things we do have?! It’s a 28 day journey of giving thanks and doing related tasks to see what magic happens. Although, I haven’t stuck to the 28 days (I’m disciplined, but do also live in the real world) I have experienced some magical changes. The overall message I’ve taken is: be grateful for what you have, set your intentions for what you want and be patient. It’s the most productive 20 minutes you can spend in a day if you’re serious about personal development.
